You’re out in the middle of nowhere for the next two days, but you realize your RV water tank has a crack. What do you do? There isn’t a Camping World within 100 miles of your location. Don’t stress. Let’s look at the best places to buy a replacement tank online. Then, the only thing you have to worry about is where to have it delivered.

What Is an RV Water Tank?

An RV fresh water tank is made from food-grade, FDA-approved materials because it holds potable water. You want clean water for bathing, washing dishes, and cooking. When you hook up to a water source at a campsite, the water goes into your RV fresh water tank.

From there, water flows through your pipes to the sink, toilet, and shower. If you’re boondocking, go with a full tank, so you have a supply of water to use while not hooked up to a water source.

When Do You Need to Replace Your Water Tank?

Some want to replace their RV water tank because of its size. Perhaps it’s too small for their needs, and they want a larger tank. But most of the time, you don’t need to replace your water tank until it’s damaged. You’ll know something is wrong with your tank when it’s not functioning properly.

Where to Buy an RV Water Tank Online

When traveling, you can buy an RV water tank online at Amazon, Camping World, or Rec Pro if you don’t have access to a sticks-and-bricks store. You can also go to the manufacturer’s website to buy a replacement water tank.

Amazon

On Amazon, you can search for an RV water tank and have multiple manufacturing companies to choose from.

You can buy from Rec Pro, A.A., Barker, Class A Customs, and more. By shopping on Amazon, you can compare prices and get the best deal.

Just make sure you know what you’re looking for in terms of size and materials.

Camping World

If you can’t visit a Camping World location, shop online for RV water tanks. In the top toolbar, click on “Maintain RV” then “Fresh Water Tanks & Accessories.”

Like shopping on Amazon, make sure you know the size and materials of the replacement. And make sure you’re replacing the correct water tank. You don’t want to buy a portable waste tank by mistake!

Rec Pro

RecPro is in Elkhart County, Indiana, home of the largest producer of RVs in the country. They sell name-brand products by manufacturers like Atwood and SHURflo, but they also develop and sell their own products.

On the left side toolbar of their website, you can scroll down to “Water Tanks” and then click on “Fresh Water Tanks” to search for a replacement for your RV. You’ll find new tanks by Rec Pro, Alpha, and Elkhart Plastics.

Manufacturer’s Websites

You can also go straight to the manufacturer’s website. If you know Alpha made your old RV water tank, you can go to their website to replace it.

Click on “Products” and then “Tanks” and search for the specific tank you’re replacing. You can type in the product number if you want to get the exact model and size.

Tips for Buying an RV Water Tank Online

Now that you know a few websites to search for a replacement RV water tank, let’s look at a few tips for buying the right one. These are important reminders even for the seasoned RVer since you don’t have to replace it very often.

Know What Size You Need

Depending on the size of your rig and your water needs, you can change the size of your water tank. As mentioned before, if you boondock often, you may opt for a larger water tank if it fits. If you want an exact replacement, note the size of the tank you have so you’re not surprised when a 26-gallon tank arrives and doesn’t fit where your 12-gallon tank used to be.

Know What Kind of Material It’s Made Of

This is important for your safety and health. The replacement should be BPA-free and made with food-grade, FDA-approved materials. You don’t want to ingest or absorb unhealthy, toxic chemicals when taking a shower. Pay attention to the quality of the materials.

Know Which Tank You’re Replacing

When you’re searching online, look at fresh water tanks, not gray tanks or black tanks. Those are waste water tanks. Although the sizes may be the same, their purposes are not. You don’t want to order a black tank to replace your fresh water tank (ew!).

Know How to Install Your New Tank

Some sealants and lubricants you might use on the slides or roof of your RV may not adhere to your new RV water tank. Figure out how to install the replacement, so you won’t be stumped when it comes. Watch a few YouTube videos and read a few blogs to understand the connections better. You don’t want leaks after installing your new tank.

Get the Right Tank for Your RV

If you need a replacement RV water tank, no worries. It’s easy to buy a new one. Whether you physically go into a store or shop online, do your homework so you get the right tank for your RV. And after you’ve purchased one, know how to install it correctly or hire a professional.

How confident are you feeling? Do you think you can order and install a new RV water tank when it’s time?

  1. I am looking for any information or hints from folks who have successfully placed a “tiny home” on a piece of property they bought–specifically in Florida. I have been getting the runaround for well over a year as I have searched from North to South Florida. I am submitting this question here because it appears that most municipalities treat “tiny homes” as RV’s or don’t know what to do with them?! Thanks!
