They were most likely formed from geological erosion and spheroidal weathering. Erosion is the process of weathering and wearing down of rocks by wind, water, or ice. Weathering is the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces by physical, chemical, or biological processes from the earth’s atmosphere.
Spheroidal weathering is a type of erosion caused by water leaching into the rocks. This ultimately broke down the granite rock corners and created the rounded, less jagged points we see today when visiting Moon Rocks, Nevada.
How Do You Get to Moon Rocks, Nevada?
Moon Rocks, officially named the Hungry Valley recreational area, is about 30 miles north of Reno and is one of the coolest places in Nevada. But to experience it, you first have to get there.
Take the Pyramid Highway (Route 445) north of Reno until you come to Winnemucca Ranch Road. Head west on Winnemucca Ranch Road. Follow that until you reach a dirt road marked by a sign for Hungry Valley Recreational Access.
You’ll know you’re there when you feel as though you’ve entered another world due to the unique landscape now surrounding you.

While the free cost may be the temptation to get you here, be wary. As mentioned above, you are in a remote location, so come prepared. Dispersed camping calls for your own water, food, and other resources. And if off-roading, enough fuel to have the fun you desire is most definitely a requirement. You won’t find a gas station there.
