No matter how primitive or lavish your RV, cooking inside just isn’t the same as cooking at home. One easy way to fix this is with a premium grill. Keep the heat out of your RV and serve up some delicious campsite eats with the Green Mountain Grills Trek Smoker. Let’s check it out.
Green Mountain Grills Trek (formerly Davy Crockett) Overview
Green Mountain Grills have figured out how to design the perfect smoker. They’ve added some incredible technology to their grills without running up the price.
One of their best innovations was limiting their product line to four models, including the Trek. The Trek is their updated portable model building off the Davy Crockett and designed for small homes, apartments, and travel. Its combination of size, features, and price make it perfect for RVing.
The simplified product line allows Green Mountain Grills to focus on cool features like their controllers. The wifi-enabled digital controller lets you adjust your cooking temperatures with precision. Monitor and control the temperature right from your phone with the handy mobile app.
Smokers Are a Camping Game Changer
Pellet grills such as the Green Mountain Grills Trek/Davy Crockett use small compressed wood pellets for fuel. The pellet smoke adds flavor to whatever you cook. You can even pick different wood flavors to pair better with your meats, like mesquite for heartier meats and cherry or apple for fish and poultry.
These grills are incredibly versatile, able to simmer around 150 degrees or grill at 500 degrees, hot enough to bake a pizza. With this versatility, you can grill like a boss, smoke like a pitmaster, or reverse sear your meats by smoking them for a few hours and then turning up the heat to finish them off. There’s no better way to cook at home or while camping.
Our Favorite Features of the Green Mountain Grills Trek
The Green Mountain Grills Trek packs a lot of attractive features for campers and grillers. Here are a few of our favorites.
Portability
The Green Mountain Grills Trek truly is ideal for travel. The fold-able legs help it pack down for easy storage. When it’s time to grill, fold it back out, and you’ll have space for four to six steaks, enough burgers for the whole family, or two racks of ribs.
It also hooks up to 12V or 120AC power so that you can use it just about anywhere. Plus, this small unit heats up quickly and accurately and doesn’t have the usual hotspots that most grills suffer. The motor and vents will keep the pellets burning, so you’ve always got the perfect smoky flavor circulating through the grill.
Great Price
The Green Mountain Grills Trek comes in at a competitive price point of $329. That’s a good deal compared to the comparable model from Traeger: The Ranger costs around $399.
Integrated Phone App
The integrated app lets you power the grill on and off (local mode only), adjust the temperature, and set timers. You can even create and manage your personalized cooking profile.
The basic local wifi mode is perfect for around camp. Or you can configure the grill at home to use your home wifi signal for access anywhere within your house. The third level is a cloud-based server mode. This lets you continue monitoring and controlling the grill remotely, even if you need to run to the store. The only thing you can’t do remotely is power on the grill.
Cons
There’s only one drawback to the Trek, and that’s bulk. Let’s take a closer look.
It’s Bulky
The Green Mountain Grills Trek grill weighs 57 pounds. The hopper can accommodate nine pounds of pellets, however. So you can see how this would quickly add up and make for a cumbersome portable grill.
