While traveling across the country, we passed through the tiny town of Dateland, Arizona. One of our family members had told us about the famous Date Shake from here, so we had to stop.
So, what is the Date Shake, and was it worth it?

What Is the Date Shake?
A date shake is a creamy beverage that combines the fruit of the date palm tree with milk and ice cream or yogurt. The result is a thick mixture that’s on the chunky side. Depending on the amount of dates you add, it typically has a more vanilla flavor with a mild date flavor. But, you can add some malt and give it a more nutty flavor.
These are a popular treat, especially in Southern California and Southwest Arizona. The date palms thrive in the environments here, and you’ll find several large date farms that serve not only date shakes but a variety of other products that show the versatility of this sweet fruit.
History of the Date Shake
Unfortunately, the origin of the date shake isn’t clear. Despite this, many give Floyd and Bess Shields of the Shields Date Garden credit for its popularity throughout the region. They started their operation in the 1920s and used billboards, pamphlets, and slideshows to make the public aware of the date shake.
Their unique marketing approach attracted tourists from all over, which was great for the many other businesses throughout the Coachella Valley. Over time, people fell in love with dates, which resulted in the creation of festivals and many other local events to celebrate the treat.
Today, you’ll find some establishments worldwide offering date shakes and other desserts made from the fruit. You don’t have to travel to Southern California or Southwest Arizona to experience its deliciousness.
About Dateland, Arizona
As its name indicates, Dateland, Arizona, is known for its date farming. Many passing through stop and take a picture with its iconic Date Capital of the World sign. With less than 500 residents, it should be no surprise that date farming is the primary industry for the area.
Dateland was established in the early 1920s. It was primarily a stop for trains traveling the railroad lines. Although, during the 1940s, General Patton transformed the desert landscape into two military installations, Camp Horn and Camp Hyder. Three airstrips created the primary training facilities for the B25 Bomber.
The town benefited from the creation of Interstate 8 in 1965. While the military has no significant presence today, it still uses its facilities periodically. Many of the soldiers who spent time in Afghanistan and Iraq spent time training in Dateland due to the hot, rugged environment.
Over the years, Dateland, Arizona, has become a popular tourist spot along Interstate 8. Like us, many stop because they’ve heard parents or grandparents share about Date Shakes or other goodies. It’s an excellent opportunity to take a break from the road and try something new.
Can You Buy Dates in Dateland, Arizona?
There’s no better souvenir to bring home from Dateland, Arizona, than some dates. Luckily, you’ll find several establishments and stands with them for sale. One of the most popular stops is Dateland Date Gardens.
At Dateland Date Gardens, you can purchase dates by the pound. A one-pound box is approximately $15. On the other hand, they have two-pound, five-pound, and nine-pound boxes as well. These are $29, $68, and $104, respectively.
While buying your dates, it’s worth considering some of their other options, too. Some popular items are chocolate-covered dates, dates stuffed with pecans or walnuts, and various date sauces, jams, and even butter.

If you’re looking for other things to do while visiting Dateland, Arizona, there are several nearby spots to consider. Let’s look at other things you can do before and after getting your Date Shake.
Visit the Dateland Travel Center
The Dateland Travel Center sits along Interstate 8 at mile marker 67. This is a great place to stretch your legs, fill up on fuel, and use the restroom. While you’re there, grab a bite and visit the date bakery. You’ll find homemade pies, cookies, muffins, and bread. These all use dates as a primary ingredient.
Of course, you can’t skip the Famous Ice Cream Corner. This is your opportunity to try the delicious Date Shake for yourself. You can even pick up some date shake mix to recreate the experience at home.
Gila Bend, Arizona
Gila Bend, Arizona, is approximately 50 miles east of Dateland, Arizona, on Interstate 8. This small town has a population of less than 2,000 residents. Nevertheless, it’s a convenient location for anyone visiting the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site. You can easily cross off both of these spots in a single day.
The area is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and off-roading. After all, like many towns along Interstate 8, it has a rich history worth discovering. It’s also home to the 9/11 Memorial Park, which features an 11’8″ steel beam recovered from Ground Zero. The town hosts a ceremony each year to honor the lives lost during the attacks.
Explore the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site
The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is approximately 30-45 minutes east of Dateland, Arizona. This is your chance if you’ve ever wanted to see petroglyphs etched into rocks. Strolling through the trails and looking at the creations gives a glimpse into the lives of the individuals who previously inhabited the region.
You’ll find a variety of etchings, including symbols, human figures, animals, and intricate designs. Researchers occasionally continue to study the area to learn more about the ancient inhabitants.
If you visit the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site, respect the land. Do not touch or disturb the petroglyphs in any way.
Yuma, Arizona
Approximately an hour west of Dateland, Arizona, is the city of Yuma. It’s around 15 minutes east of the California-Arizona border and is full of history. This is a larger city with a population of just under 100,000 residents.
While in Yuma, take the opportunity to explore some of the local attractions. Many visitors enjoy the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, strolling through downtown and relaxing by the Colorado River. Other popular attractions include Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park, Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, and the Yuma Art Center.
Kofa National Wildlife Refuge
While Kofa National Wildlife Refuge is only 65 miles from Dateland, Arizona, it’ll take you nearly 2.5 hours to get there. This refuge is over 650,000 acres in the Sonoran Desert. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy hiking and backcountry adventures. While the park has only one organized trail, several others are on All Trails.
You’ll likely spot various animals during your adventure. While it’s become a popular spot for birdwatching, other frequently spotted animals include desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, and coyotes.
If you visit the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, respect the land and animals. Bring plenty of water, as the heat can be intense, especially during the summer. While there’s never an ideal place for dehydration, this remote location isn’t where you want to experience it.
Is the Date Shake Worth It?
Is the Date Shake our new favorite treat? Absolutely not. While it was a bit too chunky for our liking, it was still edible. We found it to be a perfect stop during our adventures. It allowed us to get out of the truck for a little bit and taste something new.
