What Is A Class B RV?
A Class B is the smallest type of motorized RV. They usually range from 17 to 22 feet long and sleep about two people. Some vans have pop-up roofs for additional sleeping, which is optimal for families.
Some Class B RVs have wet baths, but many do not. You’ll typically find a small kitchen with a living space and a bedroom. Because of their small size, camper vans can fit in most parking spaces, making them easy to get around when exploring.
Are Class B Campers Expensive?
Class B RVs are pretty expensive. When compared to the size of Class As and Class Cs, you’re paying much more per square foot. For example, the Winnebago Travato 59G is 21 feet long and has an MSRP of $175,740. The Thor Sequence 20J is also 21 feet long and has an MSRP of $146,720.
The Class B vans cost more per square foot than other motorized RVs by the same companies. For example, the Winnebago Vista 29V is a 30-foot Class A with an MSRP of $203,131. That’s about $800 per square foot compared to the Travato’s $1,255 per square foot price. The Thor Sequence costs about $1,070 per square foot, while the larger 30-foot Chateau 28Z Class C has an MSRP of $146,500 for around $590 per square foot.
Who Are Class B Vans Good For?
So why would someone want to pay more for a smaller RV with fewer amenities? Solo travelers and couples love the ease of travel with a Class B RV. They can park at national park visitor centers or the grocery store without worrying about whether or not their RV will fit.
Class Bs can also be easier to maintain. Owners don’t have to worry about slide malfunctions, and a water leak is less likely if they don’t have a bathroom. While they still have the engine and systems of the RV to properly care for, with fewer moving parts and a more compact design, the overall maintenance is simpler.
In addition, Class B vans have clever design hacks to utilize every inch of space. The versatility and advanced technology help owners get the most out of their limited space. Therefore, solo travelers or couples who prefer a smaller design appreciate the innovation of many RV brands that manufacture Class Bs.
5 Best Class Bs That Sleep 4
While Class B RVs are designed more for single or double occupancy, a few Class Bs sleep 4 people. These options allow families or friends to hit the road in a compact vehicle. The length of these Class Bs that sleep 4 isn’t any longer than other models. Instead, most of them feature a pop-top with extra sleeping space.
1. Airstream Rangeline
While the Airstream Rangeline is only built to sleep two, adding the pop-top option for $11,694 allows you to sleep up to four. A suspension system supports the 78-inch by 50 1/2-inch mattress. The rear suspension system holds a full-size bed that folds away to create more lounge space during the day. This Class B measures 21 feet long and is built on a RAM ProMaster 3500 chassis with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 24V VVT engine.
Airstream is well known for its quality builds, and the Rangeline features a wet bath, an adjustable table that doubles as a workstation, and a galley equipped with an all-electric refrigerator, a stoweable electric stovetop, a sink, a microwave, and plenty of storage. MSRP starts at $147,570.
2. Winnebago Solis
The Solis is just one of the many camper vans manufactured by Winnebago. This particular floorplan comes with a pop-top sleeping area, making it another ideal choice for a Class B that sleeps 4. The rear layout includes a Murphy bed option or a sofa option. It measures 19 feet 9 inches long and is built on a RAM ProMaster chassis with a 3.6L V6 gas engine.
Like the Airstream Ridgeline, the Winnebago Solis has a wet bath and kitchen in the center of the unit and a removable table and bench seating behind the driver’s chair. The galley includes a 2-burner range, a 3.0 cubic-foot 12V compressor-driven refrigerator/freezer, and a stainless steel sink. MSRP starts at $152,169.
3. Jayco Swift 20D
Another Class B that sleeps 4 is the Jayco Swift 20D model. Like the Solis, it has a pop-up sleeping area measuring 50.5 inches by 79.5 inches. While this unit also has a wet bath in the center, the kitchen is in the rear along the driver’s side. It includes a 5.3 cubic-foot DC refrigerator, a convection microwave, a single burner cooktop, and a stainless steel sink. A sofa sits across from the galley and extends into a 48-inch by 76-inch sleeping space.
There is no bench seating behind the cab. Instead, there are two additional captain’s chairs, which provide plenty of room for four passengers. The Jayco Swift 20D measures 20 feet 11 inches long and is built on a RAM ProMaster 3500 chassis with a 3.6L 24V VVT engine. MSRP starts at $179,400.
4. Pleasure-Way Tofino
While the Pleasure-Way may not be a brand many RVers know, it’s well-respected among the Class B van lifers. The Tofino is the smallest on our list of Class Bs that sleep 4, measuring only 17 feet 9 inches long. It’s built on a RAM ProMaster 1500 chassis with a 3.6L V6 Pentastar engine.
The pop-up creates a 49-inch by 72-inch overhead bunk for additional sleeping space. The main sleeping area is below, where a sofa converts to a queen bed. Double rear doors open to provide easy access to a huge storage area of 70 cubic feet. This van doesn’t have a wet bath like the other options, but it would be challenging to fit one in the Tofino because of the smaller design. The galley includes a single burner cooktop, a 2.3 cubic-foot refrigerator/freezer, and a sink.
5. Coachmen Cross Trail 20BH
Finally, the Coachmen Cross Trail line has several options for Class Bs that sleep 4 people. But we like the 20BH model the best because of its unique layout. It’s different from all the other options on our list because it features bunk beds. It’s the largest camper van at just over 24 feet long, so there’s more space to accommodate four people without a pop-up.
The bunk beds are across from a wet bath, closet, and kitchen. The kitchen has a 2-burner cooktop, microwave, sink, and refrigerator/freezer. Two opposing sofas in the middle of the van provide ample lounge space and convert into another sleeping area. There’s lots of storage in the Coachmen Cross Trail 20BH.
If You’re A Family of 4, You Can Still Own A Class B RV!
Most people who own Class B RVs are solo travelers or couples. They just aren’t designed to accommodate more people because of their compact size. However, these five options allow families of four to camp in comfort. You sacrifice other conveniences to save on space, but you’re not out of luck if you’re searching for a Class B that sleeps 4!
Would any of these options suit your family?
