RV manufactureres aren’t known for putting the best RV shower heads in their rigs. Just because you’re camping doesn’t mean you should have to lack comfort! That includes your showers.
In this article we’re going to review what to look for in an RV shower head, other things to consider when shopping, and what you’re best buying options are.
Let’s dive in!
Shower Head Types
Just like your sticks and bricks, there are a few different RV shower heads available on the market today. Below are the most common types.
Handheld
This showerhead is just as its name infers: handheld. Many come with a mount that you can slide the head in and out of for versatile use. Some even do double duty, utilizing a second mount on the sink to be used as a faucet. These are the most common RV showerheads.
Wall Mount
This showerhead may be mounted directly on the wall, but can usually be swiveled right and left. It does limit the user’s height, however, because it is permanently mounted at a described height.
Rain Flow
This showerhead replicates rainfall and is usually a ceiling mount. It may come with several different spray settings, and large systems can include an entire board mounted in the shower with sprays coming from several directions.
Unless you have a custom-designed shower in your RV, chances are that your shower has a handheld showerhead. Fortunately for you, there are many new RV showerheads that can be easily installed to replace one that doesn’t have the features you are looking for.
Benefits of RV Shower Heads
Help Conserve Water and Energy
Because an RV shower head has a water shut-off valve, the user has control over starting and stopping the flow of water during a shower. It makes taking a “military shower” a little less abrupt. And still conserves most of the hot water, saving it for when it is needed.
User-Friendly
With a flow stopper valve located by the handle on a handheld showerhead, it is very easy to control the on and off switch for water. Many new heads have built-in grips for manipulation.
Highly Versatile
Many newer RV showerheads now spray water mixed with oxygen. This increases water pressure without increasing the amount of water used. Most even offer several spray settings, as well, and several models have optional finishes to match other fixtures in your RV bathroom.
Some Filter Chlorinated and Hard Water
Some of the specialty RV showerheads not only offer oxygenation to improve water pressure and have a water shut-off valve, but they actively reduce hard water mineral buildup by utilizing non-stick parts. This gives the manufacturer the confidence to offer an anti-clogging guarantee on the showerhead.
RV Shower Head Considerations
When purchasing a new showerhead, you will want to take all of the following features into consideration. Decide which ones are most important to you.
- Water Flow GPM – how many gallons per minute does the showerhead allow?
- Water Pressure – is the water pressure enough to satisfy your ability to shower quickly and thoroughly?
- Shut Off Valve – does it have a flow stopper valve to help you conserve water?
- Hose Length – the length of the hose on a handheld showerhead can be important. Depending on your need to move the showerhead around and even use it as a bathroom sink faucet in some cases.
- Adjustable Spray – if you like to vary up the pattern on the spray head, you should look at showerheads that have a wide variety of spray patterns.
- Anti-Clogging Feature – most of the more expensive showerheads offer a guarantee regarding their anti-clogging abilities. They use non-stick components that keep hard water minerals from building up in the showerhead.
- Ruggedness – be sure the showerhead is constructed of components that will not break. Check the mounting bracket for sturdiness and a permanent way to mount it. And remember, your showerhead is in a traveling home – it can be affected by shock and vibrations, so shop accordingly.
- Warranty – many showerheads provide warranties ranging from 60 days to 10 years to lifetime use.
- Finishes – do you require a brushed nickel, brass, or chrome finish, or will plastic do?

What is the GPM of the heads, and what is the GPM at, what pressure? This is Gallons Per Min. and usually that is effected by the Pounds per Square Inch, (PSI) of water pressure. Water volume used is directrly proportionate to the water pressure, (PSI). The volume is rated in GPM.
Thanks for some great insight here. I actually try to do a lot of this stuff.
